As a new medical provider, how do I get an NPI number?

There are two types of NPI numbers, a Facility NPI for medical organizations, and an individual provider NPI. To obtain either type of NPI, visit the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System to create a new account. Here you will create and maintain your NPI data as well as complete your application for an NPI number. The NPI is a “unique identification number for covered health care providers” (CMS.gov, 2024). All health care providers, facilities, insurance companies, and clearinghouses must use NPIs in administrative and financial transactions for HIPAA compliance.
